Welcome to our Three- and Four-year-old Combination class!

The Structure of the Three- and Four-year-old Combination Class

The 3-4 combination class takes place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30 to 3:00.  The goal of this class is to offer our regular 3 year-old curriculum for the enrolled 3 year-olds, while providing extra time and enrichment for interested 4 year-olds by offering them the option of participating in two extra days of combined time with the 3's on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  •  The interested 4 year-old students will be enrolled in the regular three day (M-W-F) morning or afternoon 4 yr-old program with Miss Sue, as well as enrolled in the Tuesday/Thursday afternoon class with Miss Jonai.

  •  The 3 year-old students who are interested in this combination class will be enrolled in the Tuesday/Thursday afternoon class with Miss Jonai, and will enjoy the regular 3yr curriculum with the added benefit of behavior, skill, and language modeling from the 4yr olds in attendance.

  •  Please note that our regular Tuesday/Thursday morning 3-year-old class is still available to the 3 year-olds not interested in the combination class.

The Goal of the Three- and Four-year-old Combination Class

Our most important goal for your children is to bridge the gap between home and school to provide the first step in their education as well as to foster a sense of self-worth, confidence, increasing independence, and a love for learning.  A positive self image is the key that unlocks a child’s curiosity and allows them the courage to ask questions, try new things, and experience a feeling of success. For the 3-year-olds this first class is often a child's first time in any kind of organized program independent of the home.  For the 4-year-olds this class offers an extension into their curriculum by adding two extra days of enrichment. Through a curriculum rich in socialization, creative play, discovery, literature, language, music, art, hand-on activities, and interaction with peers and adults, your children will come to view school as a happy and comfortable place where learning is truly fun.

Three and Four Combination Curriculum

On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, the 4-year-olds are enrolled in the 4-year-old class with Miss Sue, following the curriculum as listed on the 4-year-old Class page. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons the 3/4 combination class's curriculum mostly revolves around the 3-year-old class curriculum with project extensions for the 4's. The curriculum still revolves around seasons, holidays, and the familiar experiences that surround children in their lives.  We strive to bring to life the world around them and expand their horizons as they grow in confidence and independence while participating in fun, creative, and engaging age-appropriate activities.  With a balance of quiet and active times the children will learn to transition between activities.

Themes may include friends, family, feelings, senses, seasons, holidays, colors, shapes, animals,
community helpers, transportation, insects, flowers, and more.

Skills will develop in the following areas:

  • Social and Emotional ~  learn to share and take turns as they enter into cooperative group play with their peers, separate from family and feel secure in an environment away from home, grow in confidence and self-control, develop listening skills and attention span, and make new friendships.

  • Gross motor skills ~  rhythm activities and creative movement, large block building, exercises, marching, climbing, outside/gym play.

  • Fine motor skills ~  through handling play dough, painting, grasping crayons, cutting with scissors, mastering puzzles, stacking, stringing beads.

  • Cognitive skills ~  activities to discover colors, shapes, big/little, same/different, name recognition, exposure to letters and numbers.

  • Language skills ~  through songs, rhymes, finger plays, stories, interactive play with peers, show-and-tell.
