Three-Year-Old Class News

May 2010

Hi Parents and families!

We had fun in April painting rainbows, umbrellas, and spring trees, measuring and baking sugar cookies, comparing a bird’s nest to our chick egg incubator, planting grass seed in soil - and sharing, taking turns, playing games, getting to know each other - and laughing!  Thanks for driving to Bella Napoli Bakery for such a great field trip.  I think we ALL learned some new things about bakers, bakeries….and sampling cookies!!  ;)

THEMES:

During the first 3 weeks of May our themes will include Mother’s Day, Baby Animals on the Farm, and Insects.  Skills and concepts addressed will be eye-hand coordination, letter, number, and shape recognition, attention to task, sharing and taking turns, and observation of springtime changes in nature and animals.

The children will be watching for their grass seeds to sprout and grow.  It was fun for them to spoon (and spill!) soil in little milk cartons, and draw round faces to glue to the cartons. As the grass grows it will look like green hair growing above the faces…..so cute when the grass “hair” grows shaggy enough for a “haircut”!

Stop in this month and peek into our egg incubator as we patiently wait 21 days for our chicks to hatch…..our estimated hatch date is May 17-18!  Also, later this month we’ll observe live caterpillars eat, grow, and then spin cocoons as they change into lovely Painted Lady butterflies.  Springtime is such an exciting time for observation and discovery!

FIELD TRIP:

Our field trip this month will reinforce our Animals on the Farm unit.  On Thursday, May 13th, we’ll visit Indian Ladder FarmsAltamont for their “Baby Animal Days” program.  The children will get up-close-and-personal with lambs, piglets, calves, chicks, ducklings, bunnies, and other farm animals as they learn about their life cycles, products we use from different animals, and  what needs to be done to care for animals on the farm.  We’ll even observe a working bee hive and try to find the Queen Bee!  And of course, no trip to Indian Ladder would be complete without their famous cider and donuts for everyone!  (Peanut free will be provided as well!)

Reminders:

With spring here we’ll be going outside as often as weather permits, so please be sure your child has outer wear for the days’ conditions.

Moving-Up” Day will be the last day of school, Thursday, June 10th, in the classroom.

Happy Spring!
Miss Sue and Miss Robin
